Open City Lecture and Debate – Eyal Weizman

The theme of Weizman's (London, Tel Aviv) recent projects such as Decolonizing Architecture is the role architecture and the city play in areas scarred by social and political conflict. The lecture will follow an introduction by Philipp Misselwitz (DE), sub-curator of the Refuge subtheme of the exhibit of the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR).

Forensic Architecture

The principle of forensics assumes that events, as complex and multivalented as they might be, are registered within the material properties of objects/bodies/spaces. Experts of space, science or law are assigned with the task of reconstructing bits of history from the “things” in which it is saturated. But if things are the embodiment of events, how do they “talk", “give testimony” or "pose demands"? Through the category of forensics, the lecture seeks to delve into the interfaces between conflict, the urban and the laws of war. As the rubble of 20,000 destroyed and damaged buildings is still scattered throughout the streets and camps of Gaza, the battle of forensics has began: who can speak in the name of this rubble? and what new reality can emerge out of it?

The lecture will shift from an urban/legal analysis to the architectural work of Decolonizing Architecture (Weizman’s studio with Alessandro Petti and Sandi Hillal).
